My four month travel: 17 new countries; by default, many of these countries are former soviet and have immense history between WWII and 1991. I attempted to find direct flights as much as possible. Ironically, the one time I had flight problems was to fly between Cluj-Napoca, Romania and Prague, Czech Republic which necessitated flying via Istanbul. The flight to Istanbul ran late, I missed my flight to Prague and was forced to spend another night in Istanbul, but not in the city; so near and yet so far!
